Party Lines: The E-Newsletter of the New Hampshire Republican Party - Sept 8
QUICK TAKES FROM THE CHAIRMAN
WHAT A CONVENTION: I had the good fortune to attend my second RNC convention last week, and my first with floor privileges. I think it’s safe to say that the energy within the Republican Party is at its highest point since the 2004 election. Several of us from NH were in the right place at the right time and got to meet Gov. Palin an hour after her speech Wednesday night, which was a real treat on an historic night.
PROTECTION FOR FIRST IN THE NATION: On a parochial note, we are pleased to report that, for the first time, the Republican National Committee has recognized our traditional first in the nation primary and written protection for the primary into the rules that govern the party’s nominating calendar for 2012. Specifically, the rules create a new “carve out” for New Hampshire (and South Carolina), allowing us to go before other states. John McCain let his support for the primary be known, and with McCain’s position standing in the corner as deliberations took place, the rules committees and the delegates went along. Lots of people in New Hampshire have worked behind the scenes to achieve this carve out for many years – including present and former national committee members and organizations like the NH Political Library – and this is a major accomplishment.
McCAIN-PALIN SIGNS AND STICKERS: We are being flooded with requests. We’ll have them soon – but be aware that they couldn’t be bought legally until they were the official nominees, so it will be a few days yet. We’ll get them into the field as soon as we have them.
NH STATE CONVENTION: Sunday, September 28, at 1:00 at Pinkerton Academy in Derry. Delegates include all nominated candidates for any office appearing on the November ballot, and those elected as delegates representing your city or town in Tuesday’s primary election. More details TBA, but for now, mark your calendar.
PLATFORM COMMITTEE HEARINGS: One of the pieces of business at the State Convention is the adoption of our party platform. We will be holding two public hearings this week:
- Second Congressional District – Wednesday, September 10th at the Republican State Committee Headquarters, 10 Water Street, Concord
- First Congressional District – Thursday, September 11th at the Laconia Victory Office, 664 Main Street, Laconia (524-1999).
HUMOR: Scenes from the convention: There is a well-known rivalry between Minneapolis and St. Paul. I saw one guy wearing a T-shirt that read, “The Bible says a lot about Saint Paul but it doesn’t even mention Minneapolis.” Another sign: “Global warming doesn’t kill polar bears. Sarah Palin does. With her bare hands.”

*Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio is the first Cuban-American Speaker and at 37, the second youngest speaker in modern history. A University of Miami Law School graduate, Speaker Rubio was first elected to the Florida House in 2000 at age 29 and has quickly assumed strong leadership in Florida’s political hierarchy.
Often speaking of “big and bold ideas,” Speaker Rubio is widely known for authoring the book 100 Innovative Ideas for Florida’s Future, a product of months-long community “Idearaisers;” these ideas came from citizens around Florida to let them drive the agenda in the capital. During his time as Speaker, he has been a champion for overhauling the state’s property tax system; including passing a reform package in 2007 and supporting a very successful citizen’s petition initiative for the 2010 ballot. Married to wife Jeanette, the couple has four children and resides in West Miami.*
SHAHEEN’S NUCLEAR REACTION
After Decades Of Fighting Nuclear Power, Shaheen Flips Position
CONCORD, NH – In an interview with Foster’s Daily Democrat this weekend, Jeanne Shaheen flip-flopped her position on yet another major policy issue, claiming that she supports nuclear power after decades of opposing it. Despite omitting nuclear energy as component of her previously released energy proposals, Shaheen now says that nuclear power would be an important part of her plan if elected to the Senate.
Throughout her political career Shaheen has been a staunch opponent of nuclear energy, claiming that it is “not a safe way to generate power.” She has also worked with radical extremist groups to stonewall the construction of any new nuclear power plants, resulting in higher utility rates for New Hampshire families.
“Jeanne Shaheen has been one of the biggest obstructionists to expanding nuclear power in this country. Now with energy prices at record levels, she is engaging in yet another election year flip-flop, claiming that nuclear power ‘should be part of the mix,’” said Fergus Cullen, Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party.
“Shaheen’s evolving positions on a litany of major issues ranging from taxes, to energy policy to the war in Iraq have revealed her complete lack of core principles and intellectual consistency. With her shameless flip-flop on nuclear power, Jeanne Shaheen has once again demonstrated that she will do and say anything to get elected. Granite Staters have learned not to trust her empty political rhetoric and hollow campaign promises.”
BACKGROUND:
Shaheen Has Indicated That Nuclear Power Would Be Key Component Of Her Energy Plan:
Shaheen: Nuclear power will be “part of the mix,” (Fosters Daily Democrat, 9/6/08)
However, Jeanne Shaheen Has Been A Consistent Critic Of Nuclear Power During Her Political Career:
Shaheen: “What Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have shown us is nuclear power is not a safe way to generate power.” (United Press International 10/12/1986)
Shaheen’s Efforts To Fight Nuclear Power Resulted In Higher Utility Rates And Less Energy Production:
Former Governor Steve Merrill: “Not only does [Jeanne Shaheen] have a record of supporting broadbased taxes and bigger government, but this is the same Senator Shaheen who worked hard to delay the construction of the Seabrook nuclear plant, which in turn resulted in the high utility rates we are experiencing today,” (The Union Leader, 10/13/1995)
Former Speaker Marshall Cobleigh: “Long time NH residents know that she and I were weekly regulars on Channel 9’s Close Up program for ten years and I have many of the tapes of those programs. Those tapes show Shaheen fighting fiercely to hamstring nuclear licensing regulations.” (Union Leader, 7/3/2008)
Cobleigh: “In today’s world China is scheduled to build 50 Nuclear Reactors by the year 2020; Russia has scheduled to build 26 nuclear reactors; and India is scheduled to build enough nuclear reactors to meet 1/4 of the electricity needs of its one billion people. Meanwhile thanks to Shaheen’s and others opposition the United States has not built a nuclear plant in 31 years.” (Union Leader, 7/3/2008)
Jeanne Shaheen Organized Radical Anti-Nuclear Activists For Paul McEachern’s 1986 Gubernatorial Campaign:
The Boston Globe: “McEachern, a Portsmouth lawyer, has been part of the legal team fighting to prevent Seabrook from generating electricity. His campaign manager, Jeanne Shaheen, an experienced organizer who has achieved previous upset victories, said yesterday that she felt Sununu's support of Seabrook would be his downfall.” (Boston Globe, 9/10/1986)
The Washington Post: “McEachern's campaign manager. Jeanne Shaheen, a quiet, auburn-haired, awesomely focused mother of three, steered Gary Hart to his stunning upset victory in the l984 New Hampshire primary. She is lining up the anti-nuclear forces, which have kept Seabrook at bay for 10 years.” (Washington Post, 9/14/1986)
